Image Discovery

SUMMARY

Image Discovery is a web-based system intended to provide the widest possible access for professionals and other consumers who want to find and make use of digital images of objects of all kinds that are held in museums, galleries, commercial picture libraries and other collections in the UK.

Image Discovery is a collaborative project whose main purpose is to increase the commercial exploitation of digitised images for rights holders by creating a system based on universal access. Our technology development partner is the uniquely experienced software engineering company System Simulation Limited.

The first Image Discovery prototype will be shown to museum, gallery and picture library managers and potential users during the third quarter of 2015. The information from these consultations will then be applied to the design of our first working model.

RESEARCH

The team behind Image Discovery, encouraged by the work of the Copyright Hub, has spent the last couple of years engaging with a wide range of museums, galleries, picture libraries and representative bodies. DISCOVERY, LICENSING, RECORD-KEEPING

Image Discovery will enable users to search multiple collections, licence selected images and then keep a record of those licences. It will also enable image rights holders to keep track of the rights they have granted to all the consumers who have transacted with them.

Image Discovery will enable rights holders and their representatives to retain control both of their image content and related information and also the pricing of licences.

Through its data management and reporting, Image Discovery will provide rights holders with important intelligence on how their images are being located and how and where they are being used.

It will also provide licensees with rights management record-keeping and archiving services to enable them to manage and renew licences and to demonstrate compliance with copyright law.
